Kolkata Salesian Province inaugurates centenary celebrations

- Arvind Khalkho SDB

The Salesian Province of Kolkata inaugurated three-year preparation for the centenary celebrations of the first Salesian Province in India on May 27, 2023. Archbishop Thomas D’Souza of Kolkata presided over the Eucharist in the historical Marian Shrine at Bandel with Provincial Father Joseph Pauria, Jesuit Provincial Father Raphael Hyde, and 45 other priests.

Father Franklin Menezes, the Pro-Vicar of Calcutta Cathedral, thanked Salesians who took over Catholic Orphan Press and Cathedral parish from the Jesuits on November 11, 1925. Salesians returned the Cathedral parish to the archdiocese in 1972.

Jesuit Provincial Father Hyde recalled Jesuit and Salesian pastoral efforts made in the church in Kolkata and other dioceses. Provincial Father Pauria presented the contribution of missionaries in building up the Province and the expansion of the Province.

Salesian youth presented cultural dances representing five language groups in the Province: Bengali, English, Hindi, Nepali and Santhali. The programme concluded with a centenary anthem composed by Father I.C. Jacob and sung by Auxilium Church Youth under the direction of Peter Gomes. Representatives from the Salesian family and various institutions were present for the occasion.
