Kadal Conclave 2026 Focuses on Sustainable Futures for Fishing Communities in Kerala
Kadal Conclave 2026, organised by the Fishermen Community Development Programme (FCDP), was held on January 7 at Thirumullavaram in Kollam, Kerala, bringing together policymakers, Church leaders, administrators, experts, students, and youth to deliberate on the holistic development of fishing communities and the pressing challenges facing the marine and fisheries sector.
The conclave commenced with a welcome address by Ms Agnes John, Chairperson of FCDP. An introductory address was delivered by Fr. Saji Elambassery SDB, Director, FCDP–TMS, while the programme was presided over by Fr. Stephen Mukkattil SDB.
The inaugural session featured a message by Rt. Rev. Dr Paul Antony Mullassery, Bishop of the Kollam Diocese, highlighted the ethical and social dimensions of safeguarding marine resources and supporting coastal livelihoods. This was followed by a key message from Mr Shibu Baby John. The keynote address was delivered by Ms Divya S. Iyer, IAS, Managing Director of VISL, who underscored the role of governance, innovation, and community participation in building a resilient fisheries sector.
Across multiple thematic sessions, subject experts examined critical concerns including marine resource conservation, livelihood and employment challenges in the fisheries sector, sustainable fishing practices, and the growing impact of climate change on coastal communities.
The concluding session was inaugurated by Mr T. Thomas Isaac, former Finance Minister of Kerala. In his address, he stressed the need for the sustainable utilisation of marine resources and called for stronger policy measures to ensure the long-term social and economic security of fishing communities.
The organisers noted that Kadal Conclave 2026 played a significant role in raising awareness among students and youth on marine and fisheries issues, while also creating a platform for meaningful, policy-oriented dialogue aimed at securing a sustainable future for coastal communities.
