Don Bosco Youth Centre Pune Hosts Transformative Course on Spiritual Mentorship
The Don Bosco Youth Centre in Pune concluded a seven-day intensive course on spiritual mentorship, drawing 13 participants from September 13–19 to explore what makes the guidance of the young truly transformative.
The programme focused on the life and legacy of Saint John Bosco, tracing the formative relationships that shaped him as a youth and ignited his lifelong passion for accompanying poor and abandoned youngsters.
According to Fr. Palla Velangani Joseph (INH), the uniqueness of the course lay in its twofold perspective: “Participants examined not only how Don Bosco guided others, but also how he himself needed and received mentorship as a young boy — experiences that later inspired his mission with marginalized youth.”
The sessions were led by a team of resource persons who each brought a distinct focus. Br. Royston addressed the educational aspects of formation, while Fr. Blany delved into the spiritual depth of mentoring relationships. Fr. Valerian provided historical context and teaching principles, and Fr. Joyston guided reflections on applying Don Bosco’s 19th-century insights to today’s youth ministry challenges.
Participants, many of whom were already engaged in youth work, enriched the sessions with their lived experiences. Coffee breaks and group discussions became “living laboratories” where Don Bosco’s renowned method of reason, religion, and loving-kindness was tested against contemporary realities of mentoring the young.
