In a commendable initiative that integrates education, health awareness, and community outreach, the NSS Unit and the Department of History of Don Bosco College Golaghat, affiliated to Dibrugarh University, organised a Health Checkup and Medical Camp on May 8 in observance of World Thalassemia Day. The programme was conducted in collaboration with the ICMR Regional Medical Research Centre and the college's IQAC on the college premises under the theme “We Care About Your Health.”
The initiative aimed to promote preventive healthcare, early diagnosis, and awareness regarding thalassemia, anaemia, diabetes, and general well-being among students, staff, and residents.
The programme began with a welcome address by Arbin Kujur and Limka, followed by the dignitaries ceremonially lighting the lamp. Principal Dr Fr A. Amaladoss, addressing the gathering, emphasised the importance of health awareness and social responsibility among young people, and encouraged regular medical check-ups for early detection and prevention of disease.
Chief Guest Dr Kaustubh Bora, Scientist at the ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre and a specialist in non-communicable diseases and anaemia, highlighted the growing concerns surrounding anaemia and hereditary blood disorders, such as thalassemia, in Northeast India. He stressed the need for early screening, proper nutrition, public awareness, and healthy lifestyles to prevent complications and appreciated the college’s proactive role in community welfare.
The medical camp provided a wide range of health screenings, including Complete Blood Count (CBC) tests covering more than 20 parameters, haemoglobin typing for HbE, sickle cell disease, thalassemia, and related conditions, diabetes screening through HbA1c and Random Blood Sugar (RBS) tests, blood pressure monitoring, and body fat analysis.
A total of 350 beneficiaries, including students, staff members, DB Tech students, and residents, availed themselves of the free medical services. Participants received personalised health consultations, medical advice, and comprehensive checkups during the camp.
