Former South Asia Regional Councillor Father Maria Arokiam Kanaga Appointed Superior of UPS ViceProvince

The Rector Major Father Ángel Fernández Artime, with the consensus of the General Council, has appointed Father Maria Arokiam Kanaga as the Provincial of the ViceProvince Maria Sede della Sapienza of the Salesian Pontifical University (UPS). The General Council in its work session currently has also appointed Father Horacio Barbieri as the Provincial of the Blessed Artemide Zatti Province of Northern Argentina (ARN).
Father Kanaga born on 04 October 1956 in Varadarajanpet, Trichy-India, entered the novitiate of Yercaud and made his 1st religious profession on 24 May 1976, and his perpetual profession in 1982 in Chennai. He studied Theology and obtained his doctorate in Philosophy at the Salesian Pontifical University [UPS], Rome. He was ordained priest on 25 May 1986, in Rome.
He has served as Director at the ``Don Bosco`` center of Tirupattur (1992-94), the Theological Institute of Madras-Poonamallee (1994-96), the Salesian center of Yercaud (2002-03), and the ``Sacred Heart`` Institute of Tirupattur (2003-2008). He was Vicar of the Salesian Province of madras [INM]from 1996-2002, and Delegate for Youth Ministry (2006-07). He participated in General Chapters 24, 25, 26, 27 and 28, and was a member of the GC27 Pre-Chapter Commission.
He was elected as Regional Councillor for South Asia at General Chapter 26 (2008), and was reconfirmed in the same position by General Chapter 27 (2014).
