News reported by: KNOTS Correspondent
A Requiem Mass was celebrated at Provincial House, Kolkata on 25th June, 2014 in memory of Fr. Mathew Pallipparampil who passed away on 24th June, 2014. Along with his sister Sr. Jessy FMA and his niece Sr. Leelamma FMA, Salesians from the nearby communities and numerous other religious participated in the Eucharist.
The Mass began at 6.30 PM presided over by Fr. Jacob Thenganakunnel, Rector of Provincial House. Fr. Jacob shared some profound reflections on life and death. Among other things Fr. Jacob highlighted the humorous side of Fr. Mathew`s life. He said that Fr. Mathew was loved by the students despite being a disciplinarian. He narrated a situation in which Fr. Mathew`s past pupils invited him for a function. While the celebrations were on, Fr. Mathew told the students, ``When you were in school you were shivering in front of me... and now I am shivering in front of you.`` (Naturally, he was referring to his Parkinson disease!)
After Communion, Fr. Bertie Fernandes his novitiate companion too shared his life experiences with Fr. Mathew. Fr. Bertie said that Fr. Mathew was very helpful to him when he joined the seminary as already a grown up young man. This close friendship continued till the last days.
As Fr. Jacob described it, Fr. Mathew was supposed to travel home with Sr. Jessy his sister, to participate in the first death anniversary of their mother on Monday, 30th June, 2014. God cancelled the scheduled flight to his earthly home and booked a new flight to his eternal home.
The funeral of Fr. Mathew will take place on Saturday, 28th June, 2014 at 2.00 pm, at Bandel Basilica.
