Don Bosco, Trivandrum in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare, the Police and the Labour Department of the Government of Kerala has initiated a year-long campaign against child labour aiming to educate the society on the ill effects of child labour and to eradicate child labour through law enforcement within a year. It was launched on 12 June 2011, ``The World Day against Child Labour`` by Shri Jacob Punnoose IPS, DGP & the State Police Chief in the presence of Shri. TT Antony IAS (Labour Commissioner), Shri. PS Nair, Ward (Councillor, Trivandrum City Corporation), Dr. N Prathapan (Joint Director, Department of Social Welfare, Government of Kerala), Fr. George Ukkran (Rector) and Fr. Philip Parakatt (Director, Don Bosco, Trivandrum). The messages from Shri. Umman Chandy (Chief Minister of Kerala), Dr. M K Muneer (Minister for Social Welfare & Panchayathraj), Shri Shibu Baby John (Minister for Labour and Rehabilitation) were read on the occasion. All of them appreciated and expressed their support for the initiative of Don Bosco Society and hoped that child labour menace would be soon eradicated from the State of Kerala through law enforcement and welfare measures. The inaugural function was continued with street plays, folklores and dances on the need for eradication of child labour. This campaign will continue for a year covering various parts of the district. Don Bosco also has planned to have a state-wide campaign against child labour in collaboration with the Labour Department and the District Administrations of the State. Fr Philip Parakatt SDB
