BREADS Organizes Consultation on Children and Health in Raichur

BREADS (Bangalore Rural Educational and Development Society) Bangalore organized a one-day consultation on ``Children and Health`` in Raichur, in collaboration with Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti (BGVS), Raichur, and the District NGO Network on 1 July 2013, at KVK Hall, Raichur. This consultation was the last in the series of three consultations organized by BREADS in Karnataka to collate people`s priorities and concerns in the context of developing a new agenda for the Millennium Development Goals post 2015.
The facilitator, Mr. Vasudev Sharma, initiated the resource sessions by presenting the history, concept and the context of discussing MDGs. Dr. Brajesh then elaborated on the child and nutrition aspects, and the various government schemes and programmes that can be availed of by the people. Ms. Kammar gave an exhaustive account of the environmental aspects influencing a child`s health. Mr. Ambanna illustrated some experiments and studies undertaken by his organization to dispel the myth that marriage within blood relatives and child marriages are the primary causes of malnutrition. After the resource sessions, the participants were divided into 4 groups, one exclusively of children, to discuss the issues pertaining to children`s health. The following were some of the recommendations put forward by children`s group: (1) Free health services to all without any discrimination. (2) Provision of nutritious food and clean drinking water in all the places. (3) Address the lack of personnel and facilities in health centres / anganwadis immediately, and ensure clean maintenance of these centres. (4) Pre-natal and Post-natal facilities should be provided in all health centres. (5) Strict adherence to laws on child development and restriction of child marriages. (6) Ban vices like smoking, drinking and substance abuse. Some of the recommendations from the adult group included the following: (1) Create awareness among people about malnutrition and the relationship between age-weight ratio and malnutrition. (2) Promote Knowledge about the local food varieties and their usage. (3) Facilitate curbing of vices and superstitious practices, and ban use of plastics. (4) Make provisions to have one more worker at the anganwadi centres, wherein one worker attends to children aged 0 to 6 months and the other to those aged 6 months to years. (5) Provide playgrounds and parks for children at the Gram Panchayat level. The well represented audience at the programme included representatives from NGOs, Child health workers, district senior officers, Anganwadi workers, Asha workers, Teachers, Children, Media, Doctors, etc. There were also eminent guests from Raichur district such as Mr. S N Nagaraju IAS (Deputy Commissioner, Raichur), Mr. T Gnana Prakash IFS (Chief Executive Officer, Zilla Panchayat), Dr. Venkatesh Naik (District Health & Family Welfare Officer), and Ms. S M P Rohini Harematt (Deputy Director, Department of Women & Child Development). Mr. Vasudev Sharma (Executive Director, Child Rights Trust, Bangalore), Dr. Brajesh Raj Merta (Health Consultant, UNICEF, Bangalore), and Fr. Joy Nedumparambil (Executive Director, BREADS Bangalore) were also present for the function.
